FAQ

Is SHA-1 secure?

No — SHA-1 is considered cryptographically weak and should not be used for new security-sensitive applications. It remains common for checksums, Git object hashes, and legacy system compatibility.

Why does this tool still offer SHA-1 if it's weak?

Many existing systems, checksums, and file formats still publish SHA-1 values, so verifying against them is still a legitimate, common need — even though new designs shouldn't rely on SHA-1 for security.

How long is a SHA-1 hash?

160 bits, shown here as 40 hexadecimal characters.

Is my text or file uploaded anywhere?

No — the SHA-1 hash is calculated locally in your browser using the browser's own cryptographic API.
