About this tool
Calculates a file's checksum in your browser and compares it against a value you provide, so you can confirm a download or transfer is intact.
How to use it
- Upload the file you want to verify.
- Pick the algorithm the publisher used.
- Paste the expected checksum, then click Calculate — a match or mismatch shows immediately.
FAQ
Why would a downloaded file's checksum not match?
Corruption during download or transfer, a partial/interrupted download, the wrong file version, or in rare cases a deliberately tampered file. Re-download the file and check again before assuming the worst.
Which algorithm should I use?
Use whichever one the publisher provided a checksum for. SHA-256 or SHA-512 are the safest choices when you have a choice; MD5, SHA-1, and CRC32 are still fine for spotting accidental corruption, just not for defending against a deliberate attacker.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The checksum is calculated entirely inside your browser tab — the file itself never leaves your device.
Does the checksum comparison care about uppercase or lowercase?
No — checksums are compared case-insensitively and with surrounding whitespace ignored, since that's how they're commonly pasted from README files and download pages.
