FAQ
What is the difference between profit margin and markup?
Profit margin is profit divided by selling price (revenue) — it tells you what share of each sale is profit. Markup is profit divided by cost — it tells you how much you added on top of what something cost you. The two are always different numbers for the same sale (except when profit is zero).
How do I calculate profit margin from cost and selling price?
Profit = Selling Price − Cost. Profit Margin % = (Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100.
Can I calculate the selling price if I only know my cost and desired margin?
Yes — select "I know Cost and Profit Margin %" and enter your target margin; the calculator works out the selling price, profit, and markup for you.
What happens if my cost or selling price is zero?
The calculator handles this safely: markup is shown as not applicable when cost is zero (you can’t divide by zero cost), and margin is shown as not applicable when selling price is zero.
