About this tool
Calculates the percentage change between two values (with the increase/decrease clearly separated), or a two-way markup calculation: cost and markup % to a selling price, or cost and selling price to a markup %. Percentage change and markup are related but distinct — this tool keeps them clearly separate.
How to use it
- Choose "Percentage Change" for any two values, or a markup calculation for pricing.
- Enter the values.
- Read the result — percentage change, increase/decrease, or markup, as applicable.
The formulas
- Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100
- Markup % = ((Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Cost) × 100
FAQ
What is the difference between percentage change and markup?
Percentage change compares any two values (e.g. last month’s sales vs. this month’s). Markup specifically compares a selling price to a cost — they use different formulas and different contexts, even though both are percentages.
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100. If the result is positive, that is your percentage increase.
How do I calculate markup from cost and selling price?
Markup % = ((Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Cost) × 100.
What happens if the original value or cost is zero?
The calculator shows the percentage as "N/A" rather than an error or an infinite number, since a percentage change or markup from zero is mathematically undefined.
