South Asian and international numbering

The South Asian (Pakistani / Indian) system groups digits as the last three, then in pairs — 1,25,00,000 — and names the places thousand (hazaar), lakh, crore, arab, and kharab. The international system groups in threes — 12,500,000 — and names them thousand, million, billion, and trillion. This tool converts a value between the two and shows every representation at once.

A lakh is not a decimal fraction of a million. One lakh equals 100,000, which is 0.1 million. The number is the same; only the unit label and grouping change.

Exact definitions

  • 1 thousand = 1,000
  • 1 lakh = 100,000 = 0.1 million
  • 1 million = 1,000,000 = 10 lakh
  • 1 crore = 10,000,000 = 10 million
  • 1 arab = 100 crore = 1 billion = 1,000,000,000
  • 1 kharab = 100 arab = 100 billion = 100,000,000,000
  • 1 trillion = 1,000,000,000,000 = 100 arab = 1 kharab

How to use it

  1. Type a plain number (2500000), a comma-grouped number in either style (25,00,000 or 2,500,000), or a value with a unit word (2.5 crore, 1.2 million, 10 lakh).
  2. Or set the unit selector to a specific unit and type just the multiplier — 10 with Lakh selected means 10 lakh.
  3. Read the international and South Asian columns; every line has its own Copy button, and Copy all copies the whole interpretation.
  4. Use the direction toggle to put the system you are converting to first. Reset returns to the example value.

FAQ

Is 1 lakh equal to 0.1 million?

Yes as a value: 1 lakh = 100,000 = 0.1 million. “Lakh” is a unit name for 100,000, not a fractional unit — the tool always shows the exact number alongside the words.

How many lakh is a million? How many crore is a billion?

1 million = 10 lakh. 1 billion = 100 crore = 1 arab. 1 trillion = 1 lakh crore = 100 arab = 1 kharab.

Does it handle very large numbers?

Yes. The integer part is handled with BigInt, so large values are not rounded or shown in scientific notation. Decimal inputs are shifted digit-by-digit rather than with floating-point maths, so you never see artefacts like 0.30000000000000004.

What unit spellings are recognised?

thousand / hazaar / hazar / k; lakh / lakhs / lac / lacs; crore / crores / cr; arab; kharab; million / mn / m; billion / bn; trillion / tn. Matching is case-insensitive.
