H1 Tag Checker

Check a URL or paste a page's HTML source to see its H1 tag(s), heading hierarchy, and length, with recommendations if something looks off.

Most third-party sites block this kind of direct cross-origin request. If fetching fails, switch to "Paste source instead".

About this tool

Extracts every heading on a page and checks the H1 for missing, multiple, empty, overly long, or keyword-mismatched cases, plus the overall heading hierarchy.

How to use it

  1. Enter a page URL and click Fetch & Analyze, or paste the page's HTML source.
  2. Optionally enter a target keyword to check whether it appears in the H1.
  3. Review the extracted headings and any flagged issues.

FAQ

Does a page need exactly one H1?

Modern browsers and search engines can handle more than one H1, especially with HTML5 sectioning elements. Even so, exactly one clear, descriptive H1 remains the widely-recommended pattern for readability, accessibility, and a predictable page structure — this tool flags multiple H1s as a warning, not a hard error.

What happens if a page has no H1?

Without an H1, there's no clear top-level heading announcing the page's main topic to users, screen readers, or search engines — this tool flags a missing H1 as critical.

What is a heading hierarchy gap?

It's when heading levels skip a step, like jumping from an H1 straight to an H3 with no H2 in between. It doesn't break rendering, but it can confuse screen-reader users who navigate a page by heading level.

Should my H1 match my title tag exactly?

Not necessarily — the title tag is written for a search result and browser tab, while the H1 is written for a reader who has already arrived on the page. They should cover the same topic but don't need identical wording.

Is this a strict Google rule?

No — Google has said H1 usage is not a significant ranking factor by itself. These are widely-used content structure and accessibility conventions, not confirmed ranking requirements.
