How Pakistan income tax works

For a salaried person in Pakistan, income tax is charged on annual taxable salary using a set of progressive slabs published by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) each year in the Finance Act. Each slab has an income band, a percentage rate on the amount within that band, and — for the higher bands — a fixed amount that is added once the band is reached. Your total tax is the sum across the bands your income reaches, and your monthly deduction is roughly that figure divided by twelve.

Other kinds of income — business or self-employment profit, freelance earnings, rent, capital gains, dividends, and profit on debt — can be taxed under different rules and often with withholding at source. Filer status matters too: people not on the Active Taxpayers List generally face higher withholding rates.

A sole proprietor, self-employed individual or Association of Persons (AOP) is taxed on business income using a separate slab table from the salaried one, with a surcharge on the tax above a high income threshold. The AOP & Business Income Tax Calculator applies that table, and its rates are shown with their FBR source next to every result.

The salaried-individual slabs for Tax Year 2025–26 are shown in the Salary Tax Calculator’s breakdown table when you run a calculation.

How this is kept accurate

Every tax year has its own versioned data file. When Pakistan announces a new budget, a new file is added with that year’s slabs, rates, thresholds and effective dates, its source is recorded, an automated check validates it, and only then is it marked active. The calculator code does not change when the slabs change. No calculator here shows a rate that has not been verified against an FBR or Finance Act source.

Frequently asked questions

How is salary tax calculated in Pakistan?

Annual taxable salary is run through the FBR progressive slabs for the tax year. Each slab taxes the part of your income that falls within its band at that band’s rate, plus a fixed amount for the higher bands. The monthly deduction is the annual figure divided by twelve.

What is the current FBR tax year?

Pakistan’s tax year runs 1 July to 30 June and is named after the year it ends in. The tool marks the current year in the tax-year selector; changing the selector switches every calculator to that year’s dataset.

How is income tax calculated for a business or AOP in Pakistan?

Take the taxable income for the year (net business income after allowable expenses, plus any other taxable income, less deductions) and run it through the non-salaried individual / AOP slab table for the tax year. A surcharge on the tax applies above a high income threshold, and a professional firm AOP that is barred from incorporating has a lower top-slab rate. The calculator reads all of these from the selected tax year’s data and does not cover minimum tax, final-tax regimes, credits or tax already paid.

How is freelance income taxed in Pakistan?

It depends on how the income reaches you. Income from exporting services that arrives as foreign exchange through a bank can be subject to a final tax deducted by the bank, at a reduced rate for PSEB-registered IT exporters, provided conditions such as filing your return are met; you can opt out of that each year and be taxed on your net income at normal slab rates instead. Newer rules also withhold tax on revenue paid by social-media platforms. The Freelancer Tax Calculator makes you choose the treatment explicitly, shows its conditions, and reads every rate from the selected tax year’s data.

How much tax must be withheld from a payment in Pakistan?

It depends on the type of payment (goods, services, a contract, profit on debt and so on), the tax year, and whether the payee is on the Active Taxpayers List — the rate for someone who is not is generally higher. Some payments below a small threshold in a financial year are not withheld at all. The Withholding Tax Calculator lists each payment type with its rate, conditions and FBR source for the selected tax year, and says plainly which categories a year does not yet cover.

How do I calculate monthly income tax?

Enter your monthly gross salary in the Salary Tax Calculator and keep the period on “Monthly”. It annualises the figure, applies the slabs, and shows the estimated monthly tax and monthly take-home.

How is freelancer income taxed in Pakistan?

It depends on your situation. Freelance income can be taxed as ordinary individual income, or under an export-of-services / IT regime with different treatment that has its own conditions (such as PSEB registration and receiving payment through banking channels). This tool asks you to choose rather than assuming you qualify, and only calculates once those rules are verified for the tax year.

What is sales tax, and which rate applies?

Sales tax is a consumption tax added to the price of goods or services. The rate depends on whether it is goods or services, the federal or provincial jurisdiction, registration status, industry, and specific exemptions. The Sales Tax Calculator does the arithmetic at whatever rate you enter — it does not decide the correct rate for your transaction.

Does filer status affect tax?

Yes. People on the FBR Active Taxpayers List (“filers”) generally face lower withholding rates than non-filers on many transactions. Where a calculator here uses filer status, it is an explicit option.

Is this an official FBR calculator?

No. It is an independent tool from Goeroe Digital. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Federal Board of Revenue, and its results are estimates.

How often are the tax slabs updated?

Pakistan usually revises income tax slabs once a year in the June budget / Finance Act. When that happens, a new tax-year data file is added and verified; the calculator picks it up automatically.
