Canonical Tag Checker

Check a URL or paste a page's HTML source to see its canonical tag (or tags), whether it's missing or duplicated, and whether it points somewhere unexpected.

Most third-party sites block this kind of direct cross-origin request. If fetching fails, switch to "Paste source instead".

FAQ

What is a canonical tag?

A <link rel="canonical" href="…"> tag tells search engines which URL is the preferred, authoritative version of a page when the same or very similar content is reachable at more than one URL (for example with and without tracking parameters).

Does a canonical tag guarantee that page will be indexed?

No. A canonical tag is a strong hint, not a directive search engines are required to follow — they can and sometimes do choose a different canonical URL if other signals point elsewhere.

Why would a canonical point to a different page?

This is often intentional — for example, a filtered or paginated version of a listing page canonicalizing to the main listing. It becomes worth investigating only when it looks unintentional.

What if there are multiple canonical tags?

A page should declare at most one canonical URL. Multiple, possibly conflicting canonical tags force search engines to guess which one to trust, which this tool flags as a critical issue.

Should the canonical URL be absolute or relative?

An absolute URL (including https:// and the full domain) is the safer, unambiguous convention. This tool resolves a relative canonical against the page URL for its analysis but flags it as worth fixing.
