What is keyword clustering?

Keyword clustering is the process of taking a long list of search keywords and grouping the ones that mean roughly the same thing, or belong to the same topic, into clusters. Instead of writing a separate page for “best running shoes”, “running shoes for beginners”, and “cheap running shoes”, you can see at a glance that they belong together and cover them on one strong page.

Why cluster keywords?

  • Topical organization — turn a keyword export into a clear content map.
  • Content planning — one cluster usually becomes one page or one brief.
  • Avoiding keyword cannibalization — stop several pages competing for the same intent.
  • Content briefs — hand a writer a cluster instead of a single keyword.
  • Topic mapping — spot gaps and pillar/supporting-page structure.
  • Search intent — see whether a group is informational, commercial, or transactional.

How does this tool work?

It uses browser-based text analysis, not an AI model or an external API. Each keyword is normalized (lowercased, punctuation removed, common variants of a word related to each other), split into words and short phrases, and turned into a weighted vector using a TF-IDF-style scheme so that distinctive phrases count for more than words that appear in almost every keyword. The tool then measures the cosine similarity between every pair of keywords that share a term and groups keywords whose similarity is at or above the threshold you choose. Cluster names come from the most representative phrase in the group. It is best described as browser-based semantic and textual keyword clustering — a transparent similarity analysis, not a prediction of rankings or traffic.

How to use the Keyword Clustering Tool

  1. Paste your keywords (one per line, or comma separated), or import a .txt / .csv file.
  2. Choose a similarity threshold — lower for fewer, broader clusters; higher for more, tighter clusters.
  3. Set the minimum cluster size and decide whether to remove duplicates, ignore stop words, and estimate intent.
  4. Click Cluster Keywords.
  5. Review the clusters, rename them, drag keywords between them, then export to CSV, TXT, or JSON.

FAQ

What is keyword clustering?

Grouping a keyword list so that keywords about the same topic or with the same intent sit together, which makes content planning and internal linking much easier.

How many keywords can I cluster?

There is no fixed limit, but there is a practical one: everything runs on your own device, so very large lists use more memory and take longer. A few thousand keywords is comfortable on a typical laptop; tens of thousands may be slow or may not finish on a low-memory device. The tool warns you for large lists and processes very large lists in a background worker so the page stays responsive.

Does this tool require an API?

No. There is no API key, no account, and no external service. The clustering algorithm is plain JavaScript running in your browser.

Are my keywords uploaded?

Your keywords are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded to our servers for clustering. Imported files are read in the browser and never sent anywhere. Analytics records only that a clustering run happened — never the keyword text.

Can I export clusters?

Yes — CSV (Keyword, Cluster, Cluster Name, Similarity, Search Intent), plain text grouped by cluster, or structured JSON. There is also a “Copy all clusters” button.

Can I adjust clustering sensitivity?

Yes. The similarity threshold slider controls how alike keywords must be to share a cluster, and you can change it and re-cluster without re-pasting your list.

Can I use the tool for SEO content planning?

That is its main purpose: each cluster is a candidate for one page or one content brief, and the estimated intent helps you decide the format. Treat the output as a fast first draft to refine, not a finished plan.

How accurate is the “Estimated Search Intent”?

It is a simple check for common modifier words (“how”, “best”, “buy”, “login”), not a full intent classifier, so it is labelled Estimated. Use it as a hint and adjust where you know better.
