Engineering Unit Converter

A single converter for the quantities that come up across mechanical, civil, and process engineering — pressure, force, torque, energy, frequency, area, volume, velocity, acceleration, and density. Choose a category, then convert.

About this converter

Each category has a coherent SI base unit — pascal, newton, newton-metre, joule, hertz, square metre, cubic metre, metre per second, metre per second squared, kilogram per cubic metre — and every other unit is a multiple of it. The converter expresses your value in the base unit and then in the target unit.

Categories are kept apart deliberately: torque and energy share units dimensionally but are different quantities, and mixing area with volume or pressure with force would make the lists unusable.

How to use it

  1. Choose a category (Pressure, Force, Torque, Energy, and so on).
  2. Type the value you want to convert.
  3. Pick the from and to units — these lists change with the category.
  4. Read the result, Copy it, or Swap the direction. The reference table below updates with the category.

The result updates as you type — there is no Calculate button. Use Swap to reverse the two units, and Reset to return to the defaults.

Key factors

  • Pressure: 1 bar = 100000 Pa · 1 atm = 101325 Pa · 1 psi = 6894.7572932 Pa · 1 torr = 101325/760 Pa
  • Force: 1 lbf = 4.4482216153 N · 1 kgf = 9.80665 N · 1 dyne = 1e−5 N
  • Torque: 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483 N·m · 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m
  • Energy: 1 cal = 4.184 J · 1 kcal = 4184 J · 1 BTU = 1055.0558526 J · 1 kWh = 3.6 MJ
  • Volume: 1 L = 0.001 m³ · 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L
  • Velocity: 1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s · 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s · 1 knot = 1852/3600 m/s
  • Acceleration: standard gravity g₀ = 9.80665 m/s²
  • Density: 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³

FAQ

Which categories does this converter cover?

Pressure, force, torque, energy, frequency, area, volume, velocity, acceleration, and density. Pick a category and the from/to lists update to that category’s units.

What is 1 bar in psi?

1 bar = 100,000 Pa ≈ 14.5037738 psi. 1 standard atmosphere = 101,325 Pa ≈ 14.6959488 psi ≈ 1.01325 bar.

How is torque different from energy if both can be newton-metres?

They have the same base units but are different physical quantities, so this tool keeps them in separate categories. Torque (N·m) is a twisting moment; energy (J) is work done. A pound-force foot of torque converts to about 1.3558 N·m.

Which BTU and calorie are used?

The International Table BTU (1 BTU = 1055.05585262 J) and the thermochemical calorie (1 cal = 4.184 J, so 1 kcal = 4184 J).
